The 2009 speech of the late Brother Leader Moammar Gadhafi at the UN and the Libyan counter-revolution implemented by the US and NATO imperialism

By Fazal Rahman, Ph.D.                      June 4, 2017

In March 2011, around seven months before the brutal and sadistic murder of Brother Leader of Libya (that is what he preferred to be called), Moammar Gadhafi, I had written an article, “Gadhafi, Libya, counter-revolution, and the imperialist pack of hyenas”, which was first posted on http://dandelionsalad.wordpress.com  and later posted on my own web site https://imperialismandthethirdworld.wordpress.com (1) .  That article had briefly described the great accomplishments of the 1969 Libyan Revolution, which was brought about under the leadership of Gadhafi.  It also analyzed the nature and causes of some radical changes and contradictions in the Libyan policies and actions, in the aftermath of the Grand Betrayal of Socialism in the former USSR and China.  Another article also included relevant information about some of these matters (2).

Gadhafi was forced to bend over backwards all the way, in order to adjust to the new international situation and balance of forces and to try to save Libya from the same kind of devastation, as was inflicted on Afghanistan, Iraq, and Yugoslavia.  However, none of his compromises and adjustments were enough to prevent the American and NATO aggression against him, his country, and his people.  In retrospect, it would have been far better if he had stuck to his revolutionary principles, and policies based upon them.  He was a strong supporter of many national liberation movements, and had extended crucial economic and military assistance to them in their struggle against imperialism, colonialism, and neo-colonialism.  However, in face of US and NATO imperialist aggression against him and Libya, no one came to his aid.  Everyone betrayed him, including the African Union, in the establishment and development of which, he had played a crucial role.  Even Russia and China, with whom Libya had important political and economic relations, did nothing to counteract the imperialist aggression.  The UN allowed itself to be used as a cover and tool for that aggression.  Just like in Afghanistan and Iraq, most of the NATO and other European countries either participated in that imperialist war or condoned it.  Saudi Arabia and other oil-rich monarchies were always against the progressive, socialist, and democratic ideas, policies, and actions of Gadhafi, and were happy to see him and Libya destroyed by imperialism. Gadhafi, Libya, counter-revolution, and the imperialist pack of hyenas

Guarantee 10 percent and capital will do anything, guarantee 20 percent and it really comes to life, at 50 percent, it is ready to cut off its own head, at 100 percent, it will trample every human law, and at 300 percent, there is no crime it will not risk, even if it means the hangman’s noose.  English publicist T. J. Dunning, quoted by Marx and cited by Gromyko in his book, Memories: From Stalin to Gorbachev. P. 186, 1989.

Introduction

The invasion and destruction of Afghanistan and Iraq, by the forces of imperialism, have been thoroughly analyzed, documented, and publicized by numerous authors, including this one (1).  Numerous publications have also already appeared on the recent uprisings in the Middle East and their connections to imperialism, including this author’s (2), in which he stressed the ongoing and developing nature of these uprisings, their continuity with previous historical developments, and their potential for developing into genuine and profound social and politico-economic revolutions.  Within that general context, the Libyan situation and uprisings represent particularly complex and contradictory issues and problems for all the progressive and anti-imperialist writers and analysts.  As these contradictions are real, it is important to identify and explain them accurately, truthfully, and dialectically, and not to gloss over them for the sake of developing and maintaining a straight-line and contradiction-free position. A brief review of some of Noam Chomsky’s erroneous positions

As Chomsky is a great celebrity of the left and much of the left is also bogged down in the intellectually and spiritually debilitating cult and mass psychology of celebrity worship-like rest of the American society-the identification and critiques of his erroneous positions from leftist perspectives-some of which are of fundamental importance-are very rare, even though there is superabundance of attacks on his ideas and positions by the right-wing writers, in the service of their ruling class ideology and interests. As Chomsky has had great intellectual influence on the left, it is of utmost importance to differentiate his blunders and errors from his positive and accurate contributions, in order not to be mislead by the former and to develop accurate and logical leftist positions on political economy and various events in the world.

Along with his great intellectual contributions, Noam Chomsky, the Guru of American Left, has taken some erroneous positions, some of which are astounding strategic blunders.   As much of the left in this country and a considerable part of it in other Western countries has been, and continues to be, influenced by him, it is important to identify these, without denying or negating the accuracy and depth of much of his voluminous analyses and writings on various issues.  Below is a brief summary of some of these: Continue reading
